What is Capodimonte?
Capodimonte (originally Capo Di Monte) was the most famous porcelain manufacturer in Italy. Established about 1740, Capodimonte was Italy's answer to the famed Meissen porcelain factory in Germany. When the Capodimonte factory closed about 1820 many of its moulds were purchased by the Ginori factory which reproduced many of Capodimonte's designs. Due to the popularity of Capodimonte, quite a few other manufacturers, such as Bassano, produced similarly-styled pieces, which we refer to as Capodimonte-style ceramics.
Capodimonte is a moulded porcelain, delicately painted and gilded. Specimens range from small cups and saucers to large plaques for walls. Nearly all examples are tastefully executed, although as with all collectibles, quality varies with the manufacturer.
Original Capodimonte porcelain can be identified by its darker, greyish color while more modern imitations are typically white. True Capodimonte gets its color from the "soft paste" from which it was made, a white clay mixed with glass. Later reproductions of this antique Italian pottery are made of "hard paste" - a mixture of clay and stone.
Flowers, sea shells and mythological scenes are the signatures of Capodimonte and great quantities of this antique pottery were produced for use in Italian homes.
