SCHERPENHEUVEL MONTAIGU
Scherpenheuvel (Montaigu in French) is the most important Catholic pilgrimage site in Belgium. Its origins date back to a pagan tradition of worshipping a great oak tree on the top of a hill. The cross-shaped tree was Christianized with a statue of the Madonna. The legend is that around 1500 the Virgin Mary performed a miracle here, leading to a flood of devoted pilgrims. In 1603, the sculpture purportedly wept bloody tears due to the religious strife surrounding the Protestant Reformation. Today, the Procession of Candles is held on the 2nd of November and is a blessing procession for people, animals, and vehicles.
Subject: MADONNA / MADONNA AND CHILD
Mary, called Madonna (My Lady) since the Middle Ages, was the mother of Jesus of Nazareth according to Christian tradition. Mary’s most common titles include The Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady, Mother of God, and Queen of Heaven. The conception of her Son Jesus is believed to have been an act of the Holy Spirit, which fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah that a virgin would bear a son who would be called Immanuel (God with Us). Upon her death, she was assumed bodily into Heaven as she was specially favored by God’s grace. Mary, as Mother of God, is the ultimate symbol of the love between mother and child and is also recognized as the Mother of the Catholic Church. Her veneration has grown based upon writings of saints and through apparitions of the Virgin, such as in Lourdes, Beauraing, and Fatima.

Condition:
GOOD
In overall good condition. Antique and vintage items by their very nature are used items and will show signs of normal wear due to age and use. As we define 'good condition' relative to the stated age of the piece, we would expect to see 'character marks' consistent with that age and could include nicks or dings to a wooden or metal object, wear to a painted surface, speckling on a mirror, crazing or manufacturing glaze skips in ceramic finish, wear to a label, and some original decorative trim may be missing. If ceramic/porcelain restoration has been done, it is of museum-quality so that it is hardly discernable and would be mentioned in the listing. 'Good condition' would not include chips or cracks in any glass or ceramic item.
Item Specifics:
Shows normal wear to finish and miscellaneous scratches, nicks, and dings due to age and use.
Material:
METAL
Metalworking had its beginnings millions of years ago. At some point in the distant past humankind discovered that certain rocks could be smelted, producing metal. Further, they discovered that the metal product was malleable and ductile and thus able to be formed into various tools, adornments and put to other practical uses. As it is often difficult to determine the exact composition of metal objects due to the prevalent use of metal plating and alloys, EuroLux Antiques uses the term metal rather than the more specific terms copper, brass, aluminum, steel, etc. for its listings in order to avoid confusion.
Material 2: Marble

RELIGIOUS
Religion is often described as a communal system for the coherence of belief focusing on a system of thought, unseen being, person, or object that is considered sacred, divine, or of the highest truth. The Christian religion is centered on the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. Christians believe Jesus is the Son of God.
Christianity has played a prominent role in shaping Western civilization since the 4th century. Currently Christianity has between 1.5 billion and 2.1 billion followers, representing about a quarter to a third of the world’s population. With more than 1 billion members, the Roman Catholic Church is the largest church representing over half of all Christians and one sixth of the world’s population.
