Vintage and Antique Majolica: A Useful Glossary
When shopping for antique majolica, vintage ceramics and antique pottery you'll find these collectibles employ a language all their own. Before buying, it is beneficial to understand the terminology:
- • MAJOLICA is identified by its tin glaze. When fired at very high temperatures this glaze has a very distinct look. From candlesticks to chargers to teapots, all pieces of vintage and antique majolica are finished with this identifiable glaze.
- • PORCELAIN (also known as China because it originated there) is a ceramic material made of fine, fired clay that becomes shell-like in color and texture. Vintage ceramics made of porcelain are surprising strong and heat-resistant – though brittle as evidenced by chipped edges on many antique porcelain items.
- • IRONSTONE is used in many vintage ceramics. Ironstone occurs naturally and contains a negligible amount of iron ore. When used to produce antique pottery, it resembles porcelain but is less brittle and therefore less likely to crack or chip around the edges.
- • Vintage ceramics made from EARTHENWARE are slightly porous after firing and therefore require a waterproof slip or glaze. Because clay used for earthenware is dug from the ground, the natural color of the antique majolica or vintage ceramics crafted from this material is typically brown or red.
- • TRANSFERWARE is a transfer printing process used to apply decoration to antique and vintage pottery. An engraved copper plate acts as a stencil with which a design is transferred to tissue paper. The tissue paper transfers the wet ink to the surface of the vintage ceramic, which is then glazed and fired. The antique ceramic pattern known as Blue Willow is a well-known example of transferware.
- • SALT GLAZE is easily recognized. The texture it creates on antique pottery is almost like that of an orange peel. This effect is created by throwing common salt into the kiln after it has reached maximum temperature.
