Depend on Antique Mantel Clocks
Our ancestors knew the value of time as well as we do. The ability to plan one's work, the assurance of being on time for visits, the knowledge of when to attend church and other formal functions – all of these things depended on knowing the time. Antique Mantel clocks – unlike the stationary floor clocks that preceded them – offered the convenience of time keeping in more than one room in the house.
French Antique Clocks are Timeless
As the name implies, antique mantel clocks were created to sit on a shelf or on the mantel above the fireplace. They were more affordable than tallcase clocks and were also more accurate. Some of the finest examples of antique mantel clocks were made in France.
French antique clocks produced before the time of Louis XV were sometimes hung on the wall. Antique mantel clocks of the Louis XVI period were often decorated with ribbons and flowers – favored themes of Marie Antoinette. The most expensive French antique clocks were protected by glass domes.
Because they served as both timekeeper and display piece, antique mantel clocks are often highly ornate. An example of this is the three-piece set known as a Garniture mantel clock. In Garniture sets, the clock (which is itself well-figured) is situated between two decorative sidepieces. EuroLux Antiques offers several French Art Nouveau examples of antique Garniture mantel clocks. These sets are carved from black marble and are elegantly accented by etched designs and fine fixings. Other examples of antique Garnitue mantel clocks may be decorated with tortoise shell or wood inlay.
Antique Art Deco Clocks are Unique
Antique Art Deco clocks are less intricately styled than their French counterparts but are equally attractive. Some feature carvings of birds or other animals or items from nature. Other antique Art Deco clocks rely on the simple beauty of wood grain or naturally colorful marble.
Other Styles of Antique Mantel Clocks
There is style of mantel clock to fit every purpose, whether you're buying for yourself or as a gift. Antique ceramic mantle clocks created in the shapes of birds or dogs are sweet and quirky. Antique Clocks made in Blue Delft and Majolica make beautifully colorful and unique clocks as well. Of course, many antique mantle clocks are crafted from rich old woods that need little adornment.
