What is an Antique Sconce?
Antique sconces are typically described as decorative wall brackets designed to hold candles, or in our modern world, electric lights. It is likely that antique sconces were first used to light "looking glasses" and it is common to find sconces incorporated into mirrors manufactured from the mid-1700s forward.
Early antique sconces were often carved of the same woods as the mirror's frame (typically walnut or mahogany), but there are many examples of glass and other sconces as well.
Varying Styles of Antique Sconces and Vintage Lamps
Like all other home furnishings, antique sconces and lamps vary greatly in style depending upon the period in which they were crafted. The Marie Theresa look of the 18th Century is typified by elaborate cut glass, multiple arms, and dangling pendants. One hundred years later the Rococo Revival style reinvented this extravagance with yet more ornate carvings and curves. In contrast, French Country is a softer style while Art Deco is more streamlined.
Of course, many collectors adopt the "simplicity is elegance" philosophy and they are not disappointed. Many examples of antique and vintage sconces and lamps are of a less formal nature and feature oval or square globes that deliver design "pop" without overwhelming their surroundings.
A still interesting book written in 1919 called "Tin Can Toys" even describes the process of making sconces from flattened cans -- certainly charming vintage collectibles should examples ever be discovered at antique shops or flea markets.
Conversion of Antique Sconces and Lamps for Modern Use
While some collectors enjoy the warm glow of the candles for which antique sconces and lamps were originally purposed, others prefer the convenience of modern electric lighting. Fortunately, many antique and vintage lamps and sconces can be converted to electrical appliances with simple kits found in craft shops or home improvement stores. If you're not comfortable doing the conversions yourself, take your antique lamp or sconce to a qualified electrician who can likely do the job quickly and for a relatively small fee.
