Antique Enamelware: Functional and Beautiful
Enamelware was quickly adopted by homemakers at the turn of the century because of its light weight, ease of cleaning, and the fact that it radiated heat evenly. As if these benefits weren't enough, antique enamelware offered the added perk of presenting an attractive appearance. It quickly replaced iron and tin, both of which were prone to rust.
As its name implies, antique enamelware is simply iron cookware coated with a porcelain enamel. While early examples are often found in white with colored edges, the great preponderance of antique French enamelware was produced in bold colors like aqua-green, country yellow, and sky blue. Items were further embellished with hand-painted designs (often floral), a splatter process known as “speckling,” or pierced designs such as those used on bread baskets or other decorative housewares.
A Variety of Designs for Antique Enamelware
Antique enamelware comes in all forms. There are many surviving pans and skillets and other utilitarian items, but more fancifully designed tea kettles, breakfast trays and water pitchers also exist. One of the more unique and desirable examples of antique enamelware that has been found at EuroLux Antiques is a kitchen sink set with individual containers for salt, sand and baking soda – items the homemaker of earlier generations used to cook, clean and extinguish the occasional kitchen fire.
A collection of brightly hued antique French enamelware baking pans arranged on a kitchen wall creates a stunning focal point. Or, display antique enamelware in your china cabinet where it sits in striking visual contrast to more subdued ceramic pieces. Antique enamelware has design applications outside the home as well. Enamelware colanders make lovely planters and bring color to your patio, porch or deck – even when the flowers aren't in bloom. Vacation homes and cabins assume a lively, joyful attitude when decorated with brilliant antique enamelware and antique brocante.
