Symbolism Found on Antique Crucifixes and Crosses
Most of us know that a crucifix represents the death of Jesus Christ on the cross. But, some motifs incorporated into the designs of antique crucifixes and crosses might be lesser known and understood.
Some antique crucifixes bear a skull and crossbones. According to one explanation found in an 1898 issue of the American Ecclesiastical Review, this is because - according to legend - Adam (the first man and father of the human race) was buried on the spot where Jesus was crucified. The skull and crossbones are therefore a reminder that Adam and indeed all men, though they die, receive new life through the death of Christ.
Also common to many antique and vintage crucifixes are representations of swords and ladders. These are but two of the "instruments of passion" - items used or associated with Christ's suffering in the hours before and during his crucifixion.
Some antique crucifixes are described as bearing the sacred heart. This symbolizes the actual human heart of Jesus and his unconditional love for humanity - the core concept at the very heart of Christianity.
Wide Ranging Selection of Antique Crosses and Crucifixes
Although a personal choice from a perspective of faith, the appeal of antique crucifixes is also based on design and materials used. At EuroLux Antiques we have discovered and gathered the largest selection of antique crucifixes and crosses available on the web. Some are cast of recognizable metals such as pewter, copper, or brass. Others are carved from hardwoods. Still other antique crucifixes are made of heavy cast iron, or "spelter" which is a zinc alloy that hardens to a white finish.
Of course, design is also influenced by the period in which the antique crucifix was manufactured. Antique crosses made in the Art Nouveau style are recognized by their ornate curves and floral and leaf designs. Those antique crucifixes made during the Art Deco period have cleaner, straighter lines and less ornamentation.
Some antique crucifixes are paired with candlesticks. Yet others are framed behind convex glass. And, while some collectors prefer standing antique crucifixes, others may want antique crosses intended as wall hangings.
Regardless of your preference, we believe you will find the perfect piece among our gallery of European antique crucifixes and crosses.
