The History of Antique Clocks
Clocks are some of the most common objects found in a household today, but that has not always been the case. It wasn’t until the Middle Ages that mechanical, weight driven clocks were first invented. In fact, the world’s oldest functioning mechanical clock is located at Salisbury Cathedral in England and dates to the 14th century. Early weight driven clocks were most often located in central, public spaces such as the town hall or local cathedral and told time with just an hour hand. With the advent of the Scientific Revolution in the 17th century, clocks gained greater precision and accuracy. Spring-driven clocks ran on the principle of the pendulum and now kept time with minute and seconds hands. However, clocks were completely made by hand prior to the 1800s, which meant they were quite expensive to produce and were only found in the wealthiest of homes. During the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century, machinery was invented that could manufacture clock parts. This lead to the mass production of Clocks and Barometers, and as prices inevitably fell due to an increased supply of clocks on the market, it became very fashionable to own a Mantel Clock or Wall Clock of your very own. At the turn of the 20th century, German clockmakers dominated the market with a large variety of styles and models of German Antique Mantel Clocks and German Antique Wall Clocks.
Antique Tallcase Clocks Add Timeless Elegance
Nowadays, a great way to add a sense of history and style to your home is to include an Antique Longcase Clock in your home design. Antique Longcase Clocks are also called Antique Grandfather Clocks or Antique Tallcase Clocks. Imagine walking through your front door and seeing a large and impressive Antique Longcase Clock from England with an elaborately beautiful, wide-bodied mahogany case and a pretty, hand-painted face that strikes the hour with a resounding bong. Antique Longcase Clocks work well in a hall, on the landing area of a staircase, or in a living room or library, wherever you’d like to add a touch of timeless elegance.
