What Is Vintage Chalkware?
Chalkware is another name for plaster statues. The word chalkware is formed from the German word “Kalk” which means plaster. Many people associate chalkware with the cheap goods hawked by old carnival barkers but antique and vintage chalkware is often quite detailed and lovely to look at and display.
EuroLux Antiques Gallery's wide selection of this antique brocante ranges from intricately detailed French figurines of 18th Century gentlewomen to lovingly recreated and realistic statues of dogs and other animals.
How Vintage Chalkware Is Made
Antique and vintage chalkware survives today because it is far more substantial in form than its name implies. The base material for vintage chalkware is gypsum. Gypsum is the same calcium-based mineral found in alabaster. It is also an ingredient used in the manufacture of cement. Although vintage chalkware is made from molds, the hardened pieces were hand-painted making them all a bit unique.
The Many Designs Of Beautiful Antique Chalkware
Chalkware was first manufactured in America in the late 1700s. Favorite themes were animals and nature. Italian artisans often created religious objects from chalkware such as statues of the Mother Mary or highly stylized crucifixes.
Many homemakers purchased chalkware because of its similarity to the more expensive porcelain like Staffordshire. Vintage chalkware greatly differs from pricier ceramics, however, in that it hardens during air drying rather than being fired in a kiln.
